Soumak Rugs

Soumak Rug | Oriental RugsTraditionally, Soumak rugs are designed using ancient symbols and patterns, such as the use of geometric animals, that are directly associated with the Shahsavan tribe. This tribe used these Soumak weaving techniques clear back into the 17th century. According to historic legends, these warriors were bodyguards to Shah Abbas, a ruler of the Safavid dynasty. However, Soumak rugs were woven in various regions, making their designs and pattern usage rather diverse. Although rare, some true antique Soumak rugs feature medallions (an oval or circular design used to decorate textile) and Persian designs surrounded by tribal motifs and highly detailed borders. These beautiful antique Soumak rugs were used for as decorative floor coverings, and yet the same technique can be found used to produce various other items such as bedspreads, bags, and saddle covers. It is clear that the Soumak technique was a highly used reliable one. Soumak rugs, whether antique or modern, are extremely decorative and diverse pieces that add to any room – brightening up interiors and flattering any furnishings. They provide a thinner styled rug while also maintaining extraordinary durability. Vibrant colors, designs, and patterns please the contemporary eye while honoring a timeless tradition.
