Soumak

Soumak

Soumak rugs are produced using a technique that creates a strong, thick, durable, finely woven flat-weave rug. The strength comes from the densely packed weaves and the amount of wool used. This technique involves looping yarn horizontally around pairs of warps in an under-over wefting fashion to create the desired texture and appearance. Although some modern Soumak rugs are reversible, many antique ones are not due to the unclipped yarn left on the backs that were left so that the "correct" side of the rug would be placed face upwards.
