These antique rugs are unique; the wefts are used to create a decorative design rather than being simply for a structural purpose.
Soumak is named after the village of Shemaka in the Caucasus, a region located at the border of Europe and Asia, located between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea. Though this technique was not invented there, it was still widely practiced here. Soumak has been broadly practiced from Central Asia to Iran, the Caucasus, and Turkey.
